Habits
Being the only mammals that fly. There are 8 species common to Pennsylvania; with an additional 2 species found as visitors to the area.
All of the species in our area are considered evening bats or common bats. Defined as true hibernators, in the winter months, they eat nothing surviving off accumulated body fat.
Bats generally live in colonies. Females gather in summer nursery colonies in numbers ranging from just a few to the thousands.
Males are generally solitary finding individual roosting locations.
Disease and Virus
Bats are no more apt to contract rabies than other mammals however, people should not handle them. Some known bat Pathogens include coronaviruses, hantaviruses, lyssa viruses, SARS coronavirus, rabies virus, Nipah virus, Henipavirus, Ebola virus, and Marburg virus.
There is no scientific evidence to support that bat droppings called Guano can transmit Tb (tuberculosis) to humans. Even so, protective clothing is worn to treat and remove Guano. I am sure none of us wants to be the first scientific evidence in this matter.
Bats are filthy and ridden with lice and other parasites and vectors. Several of these parasites are not transmitted to humans and pets, and they normally have short life spans without their host. A species of bedbugs have been associated with this mammal.
Histoplasmosis is a common vector found in bird and bat droppings alike.
This virus, as a rule, does not survive in a dry attic where droppings have accumulated. Caution should be used when dealing with dropping regardless.
